At Bounds Green, our aim was to create a space that engages children through all their senses, while remaining practical and dynamic. The intention was to create a learning environment that feels calm and nurturing, yet full of opportunities for discovery and play.
To achieve this, we developed a flexible furniture concept built around real wood aesthetic, punctuated by accent colours, with tactile materials and adaptable layouts. Honeycomb retreat zones provide quiet areas for reading and early literacy. Construction platforms support creativity and shared play, giving children places to build and experiment. Mirrors introduce depth and encourage children to observe themselves and their surroundings from different perspectives. Changes in height and texture, from raised platforms or retreat ‘nests’ to softer carpeted areas, enable children to explore and experience the space in different physical and sensory ways.
The solid wood modular tables are fitted with a mix of glides and locking castors, allowing them to be repositioned when needed and stay stable during use. This makes it easy to switch between group work, creative activities and independent learning, allowing the room to adjust to different needs throughout the day. Create more floorspace by making one group table, or seat up to 22 children (in this example) at four separate tables.
Together, these choices make an environment that supports varied play and learning, without fixing the room to one physical layout set way of working.
