We worked with Hasting Hill Academy, part of the WISE Academies group, to plan and furnish a flexible early years learning space designed to support a variety of activities and create an adaptable environment for both children and staff.

Designing a Flexible Early Years Space

The room concept was developed for an open-plan area accommodating two class groups, with a maker space incorporating the Room Cube system, construction platforms, and modular furniture. The furniture includes retreat spaces and supports open-ended, non-prescriptive role play. The maker space can be configured in multiple ways to enable experimentation, writing, roleplay, and craft activities. Modular wave tables, featuring a mix of locking casters and adjustable glides, allow quick reconfiguration from large group tables to smaller individual setups. Real wood furniture brings warmth and material complexity to the space, while durable, sustainable materials ensure the furniture withstands regular use in a busy classroom environment.
